What DiskGenius Covers

Deleting a file usually removes the reference rather than the content, which is why a scan can bring it back. DiskGenius searches hard drives, SSDs, USB sticks and memory cards for deleted, formatted and unreadable data, and lets you preview results before recovering anything — so you know what survived before you commit. Quick scans rebuild unlinked file records and keep original names; deeper passes hunt for file signatures across a whole volume when the file system itself is damaged. The rule that decides the outcome has nothing to do with software: stop writing to the affected drive, and recover to a second one. Read the data recovery guide.

Windows Disk Management stops exactly where most real jobs begin — free space on the wrong side of a partition, a C drive that refuses to shrink, a disk that needs converting between MBR and GPT. The partition tools handle resizing, moving, splitting, merging and hiding volumes on both HDDs and SSDs, with NTFS, FAT32, exFAT and Linux Ext volumes all visible in one map. Table-only changes such as drive letters take a second; anything that relocates real data deserves a backup and mains power first. See partition management.

A clone is the only rollback that reliably works. Copy a whole disk to a new SSD, move a Windows installation so the machine still boots, or write a drive out to an image file you can restore later. Sector-level and used-space copies cover both faithful duplication and upgrades to a smaller drive, and a bootable move brings the EFI partition along rather than just the C volume. Keep the original drive untouched for a week afterwards and a failed upgrade costs you nothing. See disk cloning.

Drives usually warn you before they fail. SMART attributes, surface scans for bad sectors and read-speed tests turn a vague suspicion into a number you can act on, alongside secure erase and UEFI boot entry management. Reallocated and pending sector counts that climb month by month say more than any single reading, which is why the numbers are worth writing down. Do the health check before a resize or a clone, not after one has gone wrong. Start with the disk health check.

A volume that turned RAW or vanished from Explorer is usually a damaged table rather than lost data, and that is a recoverable situation.

Before replacing a suspicious disk, a SMART read and a surface scan tell you whether the hardware or the file system is at fault.

Worth knowing first:

Install it on a drive other than the one you need to recover.

Scanning and previewing are read-only; resizing and cloning write to disks.

Always recover files to a second drive, never back onto the source.
