DiskGenius on Windows 10

Windows 10 machines are a different population from Windows 11 machines. They are older on average, far more likely to hold a mechanical hard drive, more likely to boot in legacy BIOS mode from an MBR disk, and much more likely to be halfway through a decision about upgrading. That mix changes which disk jobs actually come up, so this page deals with Windows 10 on its own terms rather than repeating the Windows 11 notes.

MBR, legacy BIOS and the four-partition limit

Plenty of Windows 10 systems still boot from an MBR disk in legacy mode. MBR carries two constraints that surprise people: a two-terabyte addressable ceiling, and a limit of four primary partitions unless one becomes an extended container. If a 4 TB drive shows only part of its capacity, the layout is the cause and conversion to GPT is the cure.

Converting between MBR and GPT is supported, but boot mode has to match the layout. A GPT system disk needs UEFI boot; convert the disk and leave the firmware in legacy mode and the machine will simply stop starting. Check the firmware setting first, then convert.

Mechanical drives change the odds in your favour

On a spinning hard drive, deleting a file removes the reference far more often than it removes the data, and there is no TRIM command quietly wiping free blocks. Recovery chances on a healthy HDD are genuinely good, sometimes weeks after the deletion, provided nothing new has been written to the volume.

The flip side is mechanical wear. Ageing drives develop bad sectors, and a surface scan plus a SMART read will usually tell you whether you are looking at a file system problem or a drive that is on its way out. Start with the bad sector check before any repair attempt.

The upgrade question

Two upgrade paths dominate Windows 10 machines, and both are disk jobs.

HDD to SSD

The cheapest meaningful speed upgrade an old PC can get. Cloning the existing drive avoids reinstalling everything; the process, including what to do when the SSD is smaller than the HDD, is covered in cloning an HDD to an SSD.

Windows 10 to Windows 11

Before you attempt it, image the current drive or clone it to a spare disk. A full-disk copy is the only rollback that actually works when an in-place upgrade goes sideways.

Jobs that come up most on Windows 10

  • Reclaiming space on a full C drive after years of updates and leftover installers.
  • Rescuing files from a drive that Windows suddenly reports as RAW or asks to format.
  • Recovering a partition that disappeared after a failed resize with another tool.
  • Reading Linux Ext volumes from a dual-boot machine without booting Linux.
  • Building bootable media for a PC that no longer reaches the desktop.

Working on an old machine without making things worse

  1. Assume the drive is older than you think and treat it gently — scan, do not repair, until you know the state of the disk.
  2. If a drive is clicking or the SMART data looks bad, image it first and work on the image. Repeated scans of a dying drive can finish it off.
  3. Recover to a different physical disk, always.
  4. Keep the machine on mains power for any write operation. A power loss mid-move is the classic way to lose a partition table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does DiskGenius still support Windows 10?

Yes. The same Windows installer covers Windows 10 alongside newer releases, including 32-bit era machines that current tools often drop.

Can I convert MBR to GPT without losing data?

Conversion is designed to preserve partitions, but back up first and make sure firmware boot mode is switched to UEFI for a system disk, or the machine will not boot afterwards.

Is recovery easier on Windows 10 than Windows 11?

Not because of the operating system — because of the hardware. Windows 10 machines more often use mechanical drives without TRIM, which leaves deleted data recoverable for much longer.

Will cloning to an SSD keep Windows 10 activated?

A digital licence tied to the hardware normally survives a drive swap, since the motherboard has not changed.
