Position: Home - How to Use DiskGenius
Run the program as an administrator. Without elevation, Windows withholds direct disk access, partitions appear read-only and operations fail with errors that look like faults but are only permissions. If anything behaves strangely in your first session, check this before anything else.
Every physical device attached to the machine, listed with its capacity and model. Confirm the capacities match the drives you know about before you click anything — this is how you avoid working on the wrong disk.
A bar showing how the selected disk is divided, with file system, size and free space per partition. On a modern Windows disk expect several small system partitions alongside the main volume; that is normal.
Select a partition and you can walk its folders inside the program, including volumes Windows will not mount. Purely a read operation, and often enough on its own to answer whether data is still present.
Grouped by intent — disk-level actions, partition actions, recovery, cloning, and utilities such as health checks. Right-clicking a disk or partition surfaces the options that apply to it, which is usually quicker than hunting through menus.
None of the above modifies a disk. Doing all five first builds the mental picture that makes later decisions obvious.
Take the most common beginner job — recovering a file deleted from a data drive.
The longer version, including what to do when the quick scan finds nothing, is in recovering deleted files.
Once you are comfortable with reading disks, the natural next steps are partition management for layout work, data recovery for rescue jobs, and cloning when a new drive arrives.
The interface is denser than a consumer app, but the common tasks are guided and the informational parts are read-only. Spending your first session only looking at disks removes most of the difficulty.
Yes. Direct disk access requires elevation, and most confusing first-run problems come from launching without it.
Some pending operations can be cancelled before they are applied, but once written, changes are not undo-able in the usual sense. Back up before write operations.
Anything that erases sectors, converts a system disk, or edits partition parameters by hand. Those are repair tools, not exploration tools.
