Where the installer should come from

There is one rule that matters more than the rest: take the build from the developer. Aggregator portals repackage installers, add download managers and rarely keep pace with new releases, and a stale disk utility is the last thing you want touching a drive with unrecovered data on it. Every download button on this site hands you over to the developer's own distribution URL for exactly that reason.

If your browser or endpoint protection flags the download, do not click through the warning out of habit. Cancel, close the tab, open the developer's site again from a fresh address bar entry and start over. Two clean attempts tell you far more than one nervous override.

Which edition to download first

The Windows installer is a single package. The edition you end up running is decided by whether a licence is registered, not by which file you fetched, so the practical path for a first-time user is straightforward: install it, run it unlicensed, and see how far the free feature set carries your job.

• Free edition — good enough to look around a drive, read partition tables, preview files a scan has found and handle everyday partition housekeeping.
• Paid edition — needed once a job crosses into large-scale recovery, disk cloning and migration, or the deeper repair work described on our free versus paid comparison.

Feature boundaries move between releases, so treat any fixed list on the web with suspicion, including ours. System requirements in plain terms

The program is a Windows desktop application and it is undemanding by modern standards. What matters is less about specifications and more about access rights and free space:

• A supported desktop or server release of Windows — current builds target Windows 11 and Windows 10 first, with older releases still covered by the same installer.
• An administrator account, because sector-level access and partition edits cannot happen from a standard user session.
• A second drive with room to spare. Recovered files must be written somewhere other than the drive being scanned, and clones obviously need a target disk.
• A USB stick if you expect to build bootable media for a machine that no longer starts.

Before you install: three checks worth two minutes

1. Decide whether the drive is a recovery case

If files are already missing, stop treating the machine as usable. Installing anything onto the affected drive writes new data over the very blocks you want back. Install on a different disk, or run the program from another computer with the drive attached externally.

2. Have a destination ready

Recovery, cloning and imaging all need somewhere to put the output. An external drive with more free space than the source is the least stressful option.

3. Know what you are about to change

After the installer finishes

1. Launch the program with administrator rights so every attached disk is enumerated.
2. Let the disk list populate before you touch anything, and confirm the capacities match the drives you expect.
3. Do a read-only pass first: open a partition, browse it, run a health check. It costs nothing and it confirms the drive is being read correctly.
4. Only then start the job you came for, whether that is recovering files or reorganising partitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the DiskGenius download free?

The installer itself is free to download and the unlicensed program runs as the free edition. Some operations stay behind a licence; the comparison page covers where that line tends to fall.

Do I need to uninstall an older version first?

Usually not — installing a newer build over an older one is the normal upgrade path. If an installation is behaving oddly, a clean uninstall followed by a fresh install is the quickest way to rule the installation out.

Can I install it on the drive I need to recover?

Avoid it. Any write to that drive risks overwriting recoverable data. Install elsewhere and attach the affected disk as a secondary device.

Is there a portable or bootable option?

The program can create bootable media so an unbootable PC can still be worked on. Build that media from a healthy machine, not from the one that is failing.
